June 7, 1988 - Halftime, Game 1 of the 1988 NBA Finals: Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers. The Forum, Inglewood.
Fresh off a prerecorded presentation of the Miller Lite–CBS Sports Player of the Year award - introduced by James Brown and delivered by Miller Brewing’s Kevin Wulff, with a $5,000 donation directed to the Thurgood Marshall Black Education Fund - Michael Jordan joins Brent Musburger live.
Jordan reflects on his historic two-way season (1988 MVP and Defensive Player of the Year) and the bruising Eastern Conference semifinals against Detroit. He addresses the “basketbrawl” during Game 3 on May 14 at Chicago Stadium. An illegal Laimbeer screen and elbow “where it hurts” provoked Jordan to throw a missed right cross - the first punch of his professional career.
Musburger also presses Jordan on a then-current what-if: the possibility of Moses Malone signing with Chicago - and what Malone’s presence could change for the Bulls.
MJ also touches on his passion for golf and a lingering post-retirement ambition: competing on the senior tour.
