3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Hui, coffee shop owner:
“I feel that the economy is in a downturn and people are more careful with spending, even if they have money. For example, people would spend 100 yuan ($15 USD) they have for a meal, but now suddenly it has changed to the situation that they may need spare 50 yuan for something else, which means they have to split the 100 yuan for multiple expenses. So, how much will be spent on coffee? In addition, some coffee shops are selling 9.9 yuan ($1.50 USD) per cup throughout the year. If it were me, I would also go and buy 9.9 yuan coffee. The product is stable and produced by a chain enterprise with standardized production, which can be found anywhere. If it were me, I would choose it too.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Levitt, Chief Global Market Strategist, Invesco Ltd.:
“The Chinese economy surprised people around the world, I believe, in its ability to diversify its export mix, so record levels of exports in a year of that was supposed to be characterized by deglobalization and less integration with regards to trade to the united states, so that was a significant driver of growth, the other being, as I mentioned, industrial production really surprising to the outside.”

“A challenge for Chinese households and for consumerism, in general, has been the the pressure on the real estate market for a lot of people who have a significant amount of wealth in real estate, it's a challenge. And when you see your net worth, either not going anywhere going down, it tends to tighten up consumption. Now, the good news is there are things that can be done. And certainly on the monetary side, the lowering of interest rates can help to reinvigorate markets as well, providing fiscal support to the Chinese households, which can help to provide some balance in a time when real estate prices are more pressure.”

“I think the message to the people is going to be more support for the economy and really making steps to battle what in some places may be deflationary impulses, particularly in the real estate market. So we would expect measures to provide support. We would expect lower interest rates from the monetary policy authorities and further expansion of safety net programs to support consumption.”
