In the past, the city has been the place where the commercial transit routes from Syria and Dvin to Port and the North Caucasus are located. During the Persian era, this place was called "Ittubulagh" (Persian literal, "hot spring", where Caravanasara village was founded in the 1780s.
After establishing Soviet power in Armenia, Ijevan was renamed.
Old Caravanserai was located 10 km south of present-day Ijevan, on the left bank of Aghstev. In the western part of the city is the 13th century St. Hovhannes Church.
