In this video, I test four of the most popular bear defense calibers to see how they perform in a real penetration test. I start with the Glock 20 Gen 5 chambered in 10mm, followed by the Smith & Wesson Model 66 in .357 Magnum loaded with DoubleTap hardcast ammo, and the ultra-light Smith & Wesson 329PD chambered in .44 Magnum, also using DoubleTap hardcast. I also test 12-gauge slugs for comparison.
You’ll see these calibers fired into a block of paper and a Level IV ceramic body armor plate from RTS Tactical to see what penetrates and how each performs. I use the Garmin Xero C1 Pro chronograph to record real velocity data, and everything is captured in slow motion so you can clearly see the impact and recoil differences. I also discuss bear spray vs firearm options for bear defense.
This is a real-world bear defense caliber test comparing 10mm vs .357 Magnum vs .44 Magnum vs 12GA slugs.
