In 2005, with the publication of Treatment Improvement Protocol Number 42, Substance Abuse Treatment For Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders, SAMHSA (2005; revised 2020) established a federal policy recommendation that all substance use treatment programs should have procedures for screening, assessing, and referring clients with co-occurring mental health disorders. Alcohol and drug counselors must be able to identify clients with possible mental health disorders and ensure access to the treatment needed for each disorder (mental health and substance use). This could include referral and collaboration with a mental health clinician or psychiatrist on-site or referral to an outside mental health therapist. The alcohol and drug counselor will also use counseling techniques such as Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Counseling to assist with the treatment for mental health symptoms. If the mental health disorder is beyond the capacity and resources of the agency, a “warm handoff” referral should be made to a more suitable residential or mental health facility, or other community resource.
In this introductory lecture, many of the major mental health symptoms and categories of mental health disorders are reviewed with symptom identification and treatment recommendations to assist the alcohol and drug counselor with the coordination of care for co-occurring disorders.
