muon is an unstable particle that is created just above the earth’s atmosphere (about 60000m high up) by high energy radiation from the sun. A stationary muon has a half-life of only 1.5µs, i.e. the muon decays within 1,5µs after it has been formed. Muons travel through the atmosphere at the speed of light.(i) Calculate the time it would take for a muon, created at a height of 60,000m to reach the ground. (ii) From this calculation determine whether you would expect to identify any muons at sea level? Hence (iii) explain why in actual fact we get more muons at sea level than experiments suggest?
