A Rolls Royce Sentinel Steelman takes 21 loaded wagons from the quarry down a steep gradient to exchange sidings just off the Leicester to Burton freight line near Coalville. There is plenty of graffiti to see and plenty of loudly squealing brakes protesting at their treatment. Bardon Hill has the nearest hard rock north of London and this quarry has provided material for the Olympic Park, Wembley stadium and Silverstone. It is the 5th largest quarry in the country although it only covers a 10th of a square mile. The two Steelman locos based here are named ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ and 'Bardon Duchess’. The ‘Keep Crossing Clear’ signs are unnecessary and shouldn’t be there.
