Wine Review: Chateau Montlandrie Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux 2018

Описание: In today's tasting Wine-Searcher's Wine-Director, David Allen MW, tastes a wine made by the late, great, Denis Durantou. Durantou owned Château L'Église-Clinet in Pomerol and Saintayme in Saint-Emilion. The wine David is tasting today is from the more lowly appellation of Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux. The wine is the 2018 vintage of Chateau Montlandrie. David is looking for both richness and value for money from the wine.

Chateau Montlandrie was established in the 1800s by an Italian family, but the 12 acre estate received little attention until it was purchased in 2009 by Denis Durantou. Durantou set about improving the property. He altered the cepage of varieties planted in the vineyard, unusually choosing to plant15% of Cabernet Sauvignon. The balance of the vineyards are planted to Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). Vine age for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc is about 25 years.

The vineyards sit on chalky/clay soils on a gentle slope on the plateau in Castillon. They are at 80 meters above sea level. and the terroir is cooler than in Pomerol, the grapes here ripening later than in that appellation.

The vineyard is comprises a single block divided into 15 plots. In the winery 15 open-topped fermenters are of appropriate sizes to allow each plot to be vinified separately.

A highly lauded winemaker, Denis Durantou, oversaw this, his last vintage in 2019, dying in May of 2020. Today his daughters, Constance and Noëmie have taken over the running of their family's estates.
