To achieve high-quality big banana bunches, selecting of planting material is very important. Selection of the particular variety to plant really depends on the farmer’s choice. However, irrespective of the farmer’s choice, proper preparation of the suckers is key to establishing a good banana plantation which is pest and disease-free. The best sucker to plant should be around 1 ½ ft tall with the young banana leaves still in a spear-like shape (sword sucker). Suckers should be harvested from a mother plant that looks healthy, i,e free from pests and diseases. To further ensure that the sucker is free from pests and diseases, it should be cleaned/ pared up to get rid of the Banana Weevils and Nematodes. This can be achieved by;
