In the deep, sparkling heart of the sapphire-blue ocean lived Barnaby, a young Blue Whale.
Even though Barnaby was a "young" whale, he was already as long as three school buses parked end-to-end! But despite being the biggest creature on Earth, Barnaby was very shy. He had a voice that was deep and low—so low that it sounded like a giant underwater cello.
The Song of the Sea
Blue whales communicate by singing songs that can travel for hundreds of miles under the water. The older whales sang beautiful, complex melodies about the icy mountains of the North and the warm currents of the South.
Barnaby wanted to sing, too, but he was worried his song wasn't "grand" enough. Every time he opened his mouth, he just made a tiny hummm.
"Don't worry, Barnaby," his mother would rumble, her voice vibrating through his fins. "The ocean is big enough for every song. You just have to find yours."
The Lost School
One morning, while Barnaby was filtering tiny krill through his baleen plates, he heard a very strange sound. It wasn't the deep song of a whale or the click of a dolphin. It was a high-pitched, frantic pitter-patter.
He swam toward the sound and found a school of shimmering silver sardines. They were spinning in circles, terrified.
"What's wrong?" Barnaby hummed.
"A giant net is drifting this way!" the lead sardine squeaked. "We try to swim away, but we are too small to see where the clear water ends and the net begins! We're trapped in a maze of bubbles!"
The Big Protector
Barnaby looked at the tiny fish. He knew he couldn't fight a net, but he knew he was big enough to act as a shield.
Barnaby took a deep breath of air at the surface and dove down.
He positioned his massive, wide body between the drifting net and the school of fish.
Then, he let out his song. He didn't try to make it pretty. He made it loud.
"HOOOOOOO-UUUUUUMMMMM!"
The sound was so powerful it created a gentle wave in the water. That wave pushed the tiny sardines away from the net and toward the safety of a nearby coral reef.
A Giant Heart
The sardines flashed their silver scales in a dance of thanks. "You saved us, Giant One!"
Barnaby realized that his voice didn't need to be a masterpiece; it just needed to be used when it mattered. He began to sing a new song—a song about being a protector. It wasn't the fanciest tune in the ocean, but it was the strongest.
From that day on, whenever the small creatures of the sea heard a deep, rumbling hummm, they knew they were safe, because Barnaby the Blue Whale was nearby.
