Cultural Misdiagnosis: Are We Truly Culturally Competent?

In this video, I reflect on cultural misdiagnosis and what true cultural competence really means especially within the context of dementia care. Using a personal experience from living in Taiwan, I explore how a limited understanding of culture can lead healthcare providers to misinterpret culturally rooted behaviors as cognitive decline or poor hygiene.

As healthcare and social service professionals, we often associate culture with visible markers like food, clothing, music, or language. But culture goes much deeper than that. It includes lifestyle, values, daily practices, and ways of navigating the world all of which shape how individuals experience care.

During Black History Month, this conversation feels especially important. Cultural competence isn’t about stereotypes or checklists, it’s about understanding people well enough to give them what they need, not what we assume they need.
