The sun dipped low a sickly red,
Across the most dusty plain,
And in my heart a fear was bred,
Like a cold and sudden rain.
We marched beneath fading light,
Wearily we did onward tread,
Towards a shadow in that night,
Where hope itself lay dead.
The road ahead was terribly dry,
No water for the cracked tongue,
Beneath a vast and vacant sky,
Where mournful songs were sung.
We thought we knew the way to go,
We thought our cause was true,
But seeds of horror began to grow,
In all that we did say and do.
Turning back wouldn't grant us ease,
The path was set in stone,
With a quite strong and cold breeze,
We walked it quite alone.
The ground began to shake and sigh,
A rumble deep and low,
As if the earth itself did even cry,
For where we had to go.
The simple life we left behind,
The fields of gentle green,
A memory now for only the mind,
A world that might have been.
Now headed for that final deep,
Where shadows ever dwell,
Secrets that only the ages keep,
Within that silent hell....
