The 1971 Del Mar-Camden Homecoming Game was played at Del Mar's famed dished field. This footage is from the Zetterquist family's home movies. The Dons-Cougars rivalry proved home-field had no advantage - Del Mar lost 6 to 13. The home-team lost the big game the previous two years, which was always played on Thanksgiving Day. Camden lost at home to Del Mar in 1970, 0 to 14, and Del Mar lost at home to Camden in 1969. The rivalry was a real one with true emotion and loyalties behind it - starting in 1959 when Del Mar was built, absorbing some students from both Camden and Campbell High Schools. Camden's head coach, Bill Holland, had been a star football player at Del Mar when it opened, then became an assistant football coach at Del Mar, before taking the Camden position. Three Del Mar players, who played varsity as sophomores, played for Holland at Del Mar. The rivalry no longer exists, Camden High now is a strip mall and community center.
The film is shot from the Del Mar side, showing the arrival of San Jose State's former all-star player Herman Zetterquist, who played on the Spartans' famed all-star team in the late 1930s. His son, donor of this footage, is Jim Zetterquist, here wearing number 40.
