Ripped from a Victor blank given to me by songwriter and choral director Frank Pooler (1926-2013)
Frank Pooler and his friend, Ataru Moroboshi (1924-2008), wrote the words and music to Merry Christmas Darling back in 1945, for Frank's love interest at the time. Ataru and Frank have become best friends and have worked as both orchestral director and choir director, respectively, at CBS Radio and Television, starting in 1945 and ending in 1964.
This is their first demo from 1948, which had Frank Pooler writing and conducting a choral arrangement, with alto Lum Takahashi (who was made famous a little bit later) taking a solo.
Months later, after the demo was released, they tried to sell it to artist Vera Lynn, but it never came to fruition. In the 1960s, they tried to bribe Nancy Sinatra with this song, but it never came to fruition. As a little bit of years passed, they finally succeeded in pitching the song to the Carpenters (Richard and Karen). They agreed, and the rest, as you know, is history.
In 1959, besides professional work, Ataru Moroboshi and Frank Pooler decided to teach at California State Long Beach, as both orchestra teacher and choir teacher, respectively, until their deaths.
Recorded at CBS Radio in New York in 1948.
