Indian Railways (HR), is a public railway service controlled by the Government of India. The total length of railways in India is 67,415 km. Indian Railways carries 231 lakh passengers and 33 lakh tonnes of freight every day. Owned by the Indian Railways, the Indian Railways has 12,147 locomotives, 74,003 passenger coaches and 289,185 wagons and a total of 13,523 trains run daily with 8,702 passenger trains. Indian Railways has 300 railway yards, 2,300 freight haulers and 700 repair centres. It is the fourth largest railway service in the world. With 12.27 lakh employees, Indian Railways is the eighth largest business unit in the world. The Department of Railways is a division of the Central Railway Department of the Government of India, which plans the entire railway network in India. The railway department is supervised by the cabinet minister of the railway department and the railway department is planned by the railway board
