After King Saul dies, David asks God what to do next. God tells him to go to Hebron, and there, the people of Judah make him their king. But Saul’s general, Abner, makes Saul’s son Ish-bosheth king over the rest of Israel. This leads to tension and fighting between David’s men and Ish-bosheth’s men.
A famous fight happens between David’s nephew Joab and Abner’s side—David’s side wins. Later, Abner gets upset with Ish-bosheth and switches sides, deciding to help David become king over all Israel. But Joab, angry that Abner killed his brother in battle earlier, secretly kills Abner in revenge.
Eventually, Ish-bosheth is murdered by two of his own men, who think they’ll be rewarded by David. Instead, David punishes them because he doesn’t support treachery or murder.
With no one else left to claim the throne, all the tribes of Israel come to David and agree to make him king over the whole nation. David then conquers the city of Jerusalem from the Jebusites and makes it his new capital—calling it the “City of David.” He becomes stronger and stronger because God is with him.
These chapters show David rising to full kingship the right way—by waiting on God, being fair, and refusing to take power through violence or betrayal.
