The F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft that was developed for the United States Navy by Grumman. It first flew in 1970 and entered service in 1974. The F-14 was used as the Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical reconnaissance platform. It was also used by the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. The F-14 was retired from the U.S. Navy in 2006.
Top Gun is a United States Navy fighter weapons school, which was established in 1969 at Naval Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, California. The school's mission is to train naval aviators and weapons systems officers in air combat tactics and techniques. The school's motto is "Strike Hard, Strike Fast, No Mercy." The school has become famous through the popular 1986 film "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise, which was inspired by the school and the F-14 Tomcat.
