Cantiga 26 "Non é gran cousa"

Описание: Os contaré, si me escuchais, la historia de un juicio que hizo Santa María en el caso de un peregrino de Santiago. Este romero iba de buena voluntad a Santiago de Compostela; pero, antes de emprender su viaje, cometió un pecado: tuvo relaciones con una mujer sin haberse casado con ella. Después, el mezquino, sin confesarse, se lanzó al Camino. En seguida el demonio se le apareció, tomando la forma del apóstol Santiago con la intención de engañarlo. El demonio le declaró, «Peregrino, estoy despagado de ti. Has pecado. Yo te ofrezco la salvación; te ofrezco una manera de evitar el lago de fuego del infierno, donde ciertamente sin mi ayuda caerás. Pero antes, harás lo que te digo: elimina el agente de tu mal; has de cortarte el miembro que te hizo pecar.»

El peregrino, que sin duda pensaba que era Santiago aquel que le ordenaba esto, cumplió con todo lo que mandaba: convencido de que obraba bien, se cortó el miembro masculino. Muy pronto cayó muerto en el camino.

Sus compañeros, cuando lo encontraron frío y sin vida, huyeron para que no se les acusara de la muerte. Luego vinieron los demonios para llevarse, sin tardar, el alma del muerto. Estando en esto, tuvieron que pasar ante una muy hermosa capilla de San Pedro. De allí salió Santiago de Compostela diciendo: «Ay, falsos, no podeis llevaros el alma de mi peregrino. Lo engañasteis con mi semblanza. Gran traición hicisteis. Y, como falsamente ganasteis esta alma, muy poco tiempo la tendréis si Dios me ayuda.» Los malos diablos respondieron: «Hablas en vano Santiago. Estamos seguros de que esta alma no puede venir ante Dios, pues con sus propias manos se ha matado.» Santiago declaró, «Hagamos esto: Como no nos podemos poner de acuerdo vosotros y yo, apelemos, sin más demora, a un juez intachable, a la sin par Virgen María.»

Cuando se vieron ante Santa María, cada parte expuso su argumento y demandó su derecho. El juicio de la Juez era éste: que fuesen los diablos a volver el alma al cuerpo donde la habían encontrado para que después el peregrino se pudiera salvar.

Este juicio luego fue cumplido y el peregrino muerto fue resucitado, por lo cual daba gracias a Dios. Pero nunca le fue restituido aquello que se había cortado; así que nunca tuvo ni la capacidad ni la tentación de repetir su pecado.

She, the one wise judge, is filled with the power to pardon or condemn: God fills her breast eternally.
Since she hears me, I will tell of a judgement that Saint Mary gave upon a man who made a pilgrimage to the tomb of St.James.
In his devotion to St.James he lingered. Fate led him to put up at an inn, where he consorted with a girl without the sanction of marriage.
He went on his way without confessing his sin: the cunning Devil shone before him on the road and blinded him.
Pretending to be St.James, he said: "Let me help you to redeem your sins, and thus save yourself from the abyss of Hell."
"You must do as I say if you want to be my friend. You should cut off that part of you that brought you to perdition; then go and cut your throat."
The pilgrim, believing it was St.James who had instructed him, hacked himself to pieces, trusting that it was the right thing to do.
When his friends saw him lying dead, they felt no guilt. The Devil seized his soul and ordered him to make haste.
They passed by the church of the devout apostle, St Peter; St James came out, saying: "What perfidy! You have no claim to this pilgrim's soul, yet you have compelled him to betray my name."
The Devil answered: "God performs only worthless deeds. We can be sure that this poor man has brought everything upon himself."
Holy St.James said: "Hear ye, this is my will: we cannot judge him, but must go to hear the final verdict without delay."
Soon they reached Saint Mary and told her their stories: she concluded that the soul should return to life and seek salvation.
Judgement pronounced, the dead pilgrim regained life and served God for the rest of his earthly days, never did he revert to that first fatal sin.
