In today’s lesson you will learn 8 idioms that use the word ‘crack’ – and this is different from last week’s lesson, which was about phrasal verbs!

And today I will teach you 8 English idioms that use the word crack.
Idioms
1) hard nut to crack – a situation that is difficult to understand.
The YouTube algorithm is a really hard nut to crack.
2) Have/take a crack at something – to take a turn trying something
I don’t think I can solve the puzzle, but I’ll take a crack at it.
3) slip between the cracks – for something to be forgotten or not being done the way it should be
She needed special help at school, but it seems she slipped between the cracks and never got extra help.
4) crack open – to open or open a little bit – literal or not
I’m really hot, would you please crack open a window?
The investigation cracked opened the money laundering scheme.
Crack (something) wide open
The investigation cracked the money laundering scheme wide open.
5) crack a joke – to say something funny or tell a joke
He’s always cracking jokes and makes me laugh so hard that my face starts to hurt.
6) crack a book – to open a book
He has a test next week and still hasn’t cracked (open) a book.
7) at the crack of dawn – very early in the morning when the sun first comes up
Hope is always awake at the crack of dawn, but I need more sleep!
8) something is not all it’s cracked up to be - used to say that something is not as good as a lot of people think it is
Being skinny is not all it’s cracked up to be, for one thing it’s hard for me to find clothes that fit.
