In this primitive bow building video Clay Hayes shows how to back a selfbow with artificial snake skin. These artificial skins are available from 3RiversArchery.com and are much more affordable than real snake skins. This video will show you step by step how to install them.
For this project you'll need the skins, some waterproof wood glue such as TiteBond3, and some thing to seal the bow once it's finished. Here we'll use TruOil. For this bow we'll be installing the skins permanently to the bow. Alternatively, you could use contact cement which would allow you to remove the skins later if you wanted. There are several other videos online showing how to install these onto laminated recurve bows and longbows using contact cement.
If you're stuck at home due to the COVID thing and looking for woodworking ideas, go check out my video series on how to make a board bow from a maple board from Home Depot!
