Acer saccharum Monumentale is an interesting and rare specimen tree for the landscape. It is a natural occurring cultivar, or sport, of the sugar maple. The tree grows between 50=60 feet and retains its columnar growth without the need for pruning. Very rarely a few of its branches may revert back to a regular sugar maple and this aberrant growth may require pruning by an arborist to remove the excess growth. On this property, this type of growth has only been seen twice in 25 years.
This tree was originally found growing at a cemetery in Newton, Massachusetts in the 1860's where it became known as the Newton Sentry.
A horticulturist at the time by the name of F.L. Temple introduced the tree into the nursery trade and to this day, it is still known as Temple's upright.
Bop shows off three of these trees.
