So I have been to baku, azerbaijan and i have faced a taxi scam which i think i should let you know people so that if you are travelling to azerbaijan then you will be aware of such scams.

Booking taxi via Bolt app does not mean it is scam free. At the airport arrival hall, I ordered a taxi via Bolt which costed 8 manats. When I met the driver I realised he was already parked there for quite some time. He told me to cancel the order via the app because of payment issues (I set payment by card in the app) and pay him by cash instead. When exiting the airport area he said he needed to pay for parking fees so the trip cost totalled up to 20 manats. He asked me to confirm my hotel address again and when I gave it to him, he said that due to F1 road blockade he has to make a detour hence extra 5 manats.

From the moment he requested me to cancel order in app, I knew I was getting scammed. But I willingly let it go and complied because I was tired from the overnight flight, wanted to check in my hotel quickly, and did not have the mood for an argument. Moreover even if I ditched the scam driver, my next order might be the same scam again.

This is just to caution fellow travellers that booking via Bolt does not necessarily mean you are safe from scams. Of course I still feel Bolt is still the best way for airport transfer to city.

As soon as I stepped out of the airport and booked a cab via Bolt taxi app which showed 6 Manat after discount , the driver tried to scam me by saying this is the starting price of the trip and full price will be displayed later and he showed me a third party app with a meter running on it . Realised it was a scam and asked him to drop me back at the airport (we just left the exit gate of airport at this point of time ) and then he started threatening me by asking to pay him the 6 Manat for parking fees. I asked him to drop me near the police car and will pay there . Fortunately, he just left me at the exit gate of airport and then left. Tried booking the taxi again via app and this time asked the driver before getting into the taxi if it’s the final price and he said no give 50 Manat and cancel the ride will take you the destination . Did not feel safe with this option so cancelled again . Used AirPort Express bus to get to the centre at last .


📌 Taxi scam - there are so many taxi scams in different ways but the common one is airport taxi scam! Once you board the taxi they will cancel the booking & then eventually charge you more after reaching the location! N if you deny to pay more, they won't give you your luggage's and get aggressive.

How do you know if a taxi is scamming you?

The meter may also appear to “jump” or go up in an outsized way compared to the actual rates.
