Japan Airlines Cargo Flight 1045 is one of the most disturbing accidents in aviation history. On January 13, 1977, a McDonnell Douglas DC-8 cargo aircraft prepared for a routine transpacific flight from Anchorage, Alaska, to Tokyo. On board were five people and an unusual cargo: 56 live cattle.
Everything seemed routine at first. The aircraft had arrived earlier from Washington and was preparing for the final leg of its journey across the Pacific. Weather conditions were cold, visibility was limited, and there were concerns about possible ice formation on the aircraft. Despite these risks, the crew continued preparing the aircraft for departure.
But there was a much more serious problem inside the cockpit. Before the flight even began, a taxi driver reported that the captain appeared intoxicated and was behaving strangely. His speech was slurred, his coordination was poor, and he struggled to maintain balance. The warning reached airport personnel, yet the flight was never stopped.
Shortly after takeoff from Anchorage, the heavily loaded DC-8 lifted off the runway but began climbing at an abnormally steep angle. Within seconds, the aircraft lost speed and entered an aerodynamic stall. The stall warning activated, but it was already too late. The aircraft crashed just beyond the runway and burst into flames. There were no survivors.
Investigators later determined that the accident was caused by a deadly combination of factors: the captain’s severe alcohol intoxication, possible ice contamination on the aircraft, and excessive control inputs during the takeoff rotation. Toxicology results revealed the captain’s blood alcohol concentration was around 0.3%, an extremely high level that made safe flight impossible.
The crash of Japan Airlines Cargo Flight 1045 became a powerful reminder of the importance of crew fitness, strict alcohol regulations, and proper decision-making in aviation safety. It also reinforced the dangers that even small amounts of ice can pose to an aircraft during takeoff.
In this video we analyze the timeline of events, the cockpit decisions, and the investigation that revealed the shocking truth behind one of aviation’s most preventable disasters.
