Monocle is a newborn baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox female pup was found on the ground on concrete under a bottlebrush tree in the grounds of an apartment block; she still had her fresh umbilical cord which makes her around 12 hours old.
She had a hugely swollen eye which looked like it had a bleed behind it, and the other eye looked like it wasn't fully unzipped (the lids weren't quite open) and it appeared small and not quite formed.
It was a late on a Saturday and the local bat friendly vet practice was about to close but I was able to get her swollen eye stained to check for ulceration; it was superficially ulcerated across the entire surface of her eye, which was so swollen that she couldn't close her lids over it so the surface had dried out and ulcerated. She was started on antibiotic eye goop and good analgesia and I planned to find a specialist willing to look at her eyes early the next week
I had some hopes that her bad eye will be salvageable, or the good eye will be able to give her enough sight for flight and release, however it's looking increasingly unlikely. Her survival isn't particularly high on the possibility list at the moment but I await the imaging her eyes tomorrow to give me more information.
I have been entertaining myself attempting to get a dressing around her eye to protect the surface while her eyelid won't close; I think I did an awesome job today.
Hang in there sweetie.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.
