"Should Wives Contribute Financially?", the second khartirah from Shaykh Waleed Basyouni taraweeh prayer 2025.
*1. Can a Woman Work in Islam?*
In Islam, women are permitted to engage in employment. Historical examples include the wives of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other women who managed businesses or held professional positions. It is essential to ensure that work aligns with Islamic principles and prioritizes family responsibilities.
*2. Does a Wife Require Her Husband’s Permission to Work?*
If a woman was already employed prior to marriage and her husband consented, she is entitled to continue her work without seeking permission. Conversely, if she includes her right to work in the marriage contract, she has full autonomy to pursue employment. If she chooses to start working after marriage, she must consult and obtain permission from her husband. Mutual understanding and agreement are crucial in such matters.
*3. Financial Responsibilities: Should a Wife Contribute to the Household?*
In Islam, the husband is financially responsible for the family, and the wife is not obligated to contribute financially. However, if a woman chooses to work, her earnings are hers unless otherwise agreed upon. Any work-related expenses, such as transportation or childcare, should be fairly discussed and shared between spouses.
*4. Challenges of Women Working:*
Some men prefer working wives to alleviate financial burdens, while others prefer their wives to remain at home. In modern times, dual-income households have become common due to financial pressures. Women should ensure that their work does not compromise their responsibilities towards their families. Happiness within a household is not solely dependent on financial wealth.
*5. The Islamic Perspective on Family Balance:*
While women were employed during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), their family and children remained their primary focus. Unfortunately, many children today suffer from a lack of parental attention due to excessive work hours for both parents. The speaker emphasizes that the goal is not solely to “make a living,” but to “make a life.”
