The Kolot HaLev community choir in Greater Washington, DC and guest soloist Cantor Natasha J. Hirschhorn perform Ki Elecha under the musical direction of Hazzan Dr. Ramón Tasat.
Melody by Shirona, arranged by Charles Osborne
"Ki Elecha" ("because my soul longs for You") is a setting of the first lines of the Hebrew hymn best known as "Anim Zemirot" (I will compose pleasant songs):
Soothing songs and poems I weave because my soul longs for You.
My soul desires the shadow of your hand, to know every one of Your secrets.
Each time I speak of Your glory, my heart longs for Your love.
Therefore I will speak about You, about Your glories. Your name I shall honor with love songs.
Shirona is one of the most original songwriters in today’s Jewish music scene. Born in Brooklyn to an American mother and a ‘6th generation Israeli’ father, Shirona treats the liturgical text and the melody as equal partners, blending seemingly traditional and contemporary Jewish music.
