On January 28, 2024, at approximately 12:17 p.m., a Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop on a gray 2022 Dodge Challenger traveling 77 mph in a 50-mph zone on State Road 50 (Cortez Blvd) in Brooksville. After identifying the vehicle as a rental with an extremely dark window tint, the trooper instructed the driver to lower his window, shut off the vehicle, and place the keys on the roof. Instead, the driver fled at a high rate of speed, and a pursuit was initiated.
During the chase, the Challenger reached speeds approaching 150 mph, and the driver continued to operate recklessly for about 7 miles before an attempted PIT maneuver failed to stop the vehicle. The chase then reversed direction and continued eastbound for approximately another 4 miles. The pursuit ended when the driver lost control and crashed at the intersection of State Road 50 and County Road 541, also striking two pedestrian crossing signals and another motorist’s vehicle.
The driver was identified as Brandon Corey Johnson (DOB 03/22/1995), who had never been issued a valid driver’s license and had an active violation of probation warrant for battery in Hernando County. Three passengers were in the vehicle, including a 10- and a 15-year-old, prompting a response and investigation by the Florida Department of Children and Families for potential child abuse without great bodily harm.
A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple controlled substances, including cocaine and marijuana.
Law enforcement also identified the adult passenger as 31-year-old William Xavier Glover, a five-time convicted felon currently on probation/supervised release. Inside the vehicle, officers found a loaded Glock 9 mm handgun with a 30 round magazine, a red backpack containing nearly 40 grams of marijuana, 12.8 grams of cocaine, a digital scale, and an opened bottle of 1800 Tequila (half full). Glover was also found in possession of another person’s Florida ID card in his wallet.
Both Johnson and Glover were transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. Johnson faces multiple charges including violation of probation, fleeing to elude police, cruelty toward a child, and drug possession, and Glover faces charges including possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, marijuana possession over 20 grams, drug equipment possession, and fraud/impersonation.
