Amid rising resentment among the Matua community during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, the Centre has accelerated the implementation process of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Reports suggest that districts with significant Matua population have witnessed the highest number of voter name deletions, triggering political tension ahead of the upcoming elections.

In response to the backlash, the Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted a Special Committee through an official Gazette Notification to oversee the implementation of CAA. The committee will scrutinize citizenship applications, verify the identity and eligibility of applicants, and hold the authority to approve or reject citizenship requests under the CAA framework.

The committee will be headed by the Deputy Registrar General associated with the Census operations in West Bengal. A senior bureaucrat overseeing census responsibilities in the state will lead the panel. Additionally, a Deputy Secretary-level officer from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) will also be part of the special committee.

The move is being seen as a significant political development ahead of elections, especially in Matua-dominated regions. The fast-tracked CAA implementation has sparked fresh debate over citizenship verification, voter list deletions, and electoral strategy in West Bengal.
