-Big mixes = Use of these super-technology plugins that were created by geniuses
but yeah, not replacing, cleaning up low end, and adding in some heaviness at the mixbus

Mixing with the mixbus/mastering ON?
Yeah!!! If your CPU can handle it... use a high bitrate 1024bits or whatever it is, rather than the 128 etc that might lag... and...
Yes, its more work... Change something in the instruments/busses, and boom, you might need to adjust the mixbus... But... Maybe this is more fun :)
And you can always do it YOUR way !!!
