Prof. Dr. Hamidullah Marazi, also known as Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi, is a distinguished Kashmiri Islamic scholar, philosopher, and academic leader renowned for his profound contributions to comparative religions, Islamic philosophy, and the intersection of faith with modern Western thought. Hailing from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, he has dedicated his career to fostering intellectual dialogue between Islamic traditions and contemporary global challenges, emphasizing themes like education, ethics, and cultural resilience.
Marazi holds advanced degrees from the University of Kashmir and has built an illustrious academic trajectory. He serves as Head and Professor of Religious Studies at the Central University of Kashmir (CUK), where he previously directed the Shah-i-Hamdan Institute of Islamic Studies. His international footprint includes a stint as a Visiting Research Fellow at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he held the position of Professor of Comparative Religions and Philosophy. Notably, he has served as Dean of the School of Social Sciences at IIUM for two terms (2016–2017 and 2018–2023) and as Dean of Media Studies, while supervising numerous PhD students in interdisciplinary research.
A prolific author and thinker, Marazi's works explore the transformative potential of Islam in the modern era. His writings, including analyses of Allama Iqbal's prophetic critiques of secular knowledge systems and scholarly papers on historical figures like the medieval surgeon Al-Zahrawi, bridge classical Islamic scholarship with pressing issues such as digital ethics, AI's impact on faith, and the erosion of tradition by modernity. He is a sought-after speaker at global forums, including conferences on Islamic legacy, and contributes to organizations like the Institute of Objective Studies in New Delhi.
Marazi's philosophy underscores intellectual sovereignty and ijtihad (independent reasoning) as antidotes to cultural erosion, urging Muslims to reclaim their heritage amid technological "fitnah" (trials). With expertise in languages like Arabic, Urdu, and Persian, he continues to inspire a new generation of scholars through his rigorous, empathetic approach to interfaith and intercultural understanding.
