Here's another one from the singing of Rita Gallagher. Rita is an Irish singer who learned from and was influenced by the great Paddy Tunney. I love her strong alto voice, though I usually have to kick any songs I learn from her up a few steps! I took away much of her ornamentation and added a bit of my own, too.

"Lovely Willie" is a traditional song, similar in story to "Young Emily" and "Young Edmund in the Lowlands" - a murder ballad where the young woman's father kills her lover. In "Young Edmund" it's done with the intent to steal the young lover's new riches, but in this story it's not quite as obvious. She mentions being waited upon by lords, dukes and earls, so the implication would be that poor Willie is of a lower station than the young woman, and welp, the father just can't permit their romance. Brutal.

At least the melody, which pivots between major and minor, is beautiful!
