As a rule, I do not like romantic movies - wait, let me rephrase that: I stay far away from rom-coms.

Which is why I watched this one.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in not a romantic comedy, per se, because it's not a comedy - but it has elements of a traditional rom com in it.

Let's get the most important question out of the way.

Do Margot Robbie and Colin Ferrell have chemistry?

Let me put it this way - I was rooting for them to get together.

But not because of their chemistry, but because of all the crap they'd each been through in their lives.

And that's the movie's main focus: the couple's individual introspective experiences as they revisit their prospective pasts, and are forced to confront events that may hinder them from leaping into a permanent relationship.

In real life, this translates to having those initial long, awkward conversations where you and your potential partner swap life stories, explaining how you got to the point where you are.

It's basically A Christmas Carol set in America, not during Christmas, minus the three spirits.

Okay, it's not like A Christmas Carol at all.

So this movie visualizes this hopeful couple's initial long talk about each other.

As for the performances, I thought Collin Ferrell was light on his feet, and charming when he needed to be.

Honestly, since Phone Booth I've had a hard time believing that he can actually be a nice guy for real and actually give a shit about anyone.

But I'd say he came the closest convincing me in this movie.

And Margot Robbie charmed the pants off me - sorry, wrong choice of words.

But you know what I mean.

I can very easily see why Collin Ferrell's character was smitten by her, and when she breaks his heart, I can almost feel the pain that he's going through.

My wife, whom this movie is tailored to, did not make it through.

It was just a bit too abstract, without giving it a cause.

Like, a door appears out of nowhere, and the characters just accept it and walk through, no questions asks, and the movie never tells us how or why it got there.

Now, looking back, I realize the whole thing's just a metaphor, but for those who are a bit more literal and see the world in black in white, it's probably going to be a bit off-putting to you.

It's not one that I'll have to watch over and over, but I know many people will feel differently toward this movie. I'm going to call it Mid, because it's not a movie everyone has to see.

Could it be a good movie for new couples?

Maybe. It could start some interesting conversations, or it could light a few arguments.

You just have to know yourself and your partner to know if you can get through a movie like this.
