In November 2014, Dutch television channel Family7 joined international relief organisation Medair to explore the growing refugee situation in South Sudan.
Together they travelled to Maban County, Upper Nile State, located in the north-east of the country, to Yusuf Batil Camp where Medair is providing vital water, sanitation, and hygiene support, as well as health and nutrition services, to more than 40,000 Sudanese refugees.
In this episode, the second in a four-part series, Family7 reports on the dire circumstances of people affected by war. You'll see their travels and experiences of Yusuf Batil Camp, where Family7 captures the struggles refugees face and the ongoing crisis for food. You'll meet Hassan, who has been tortured before he could flee to safety and came to Maban.
South Sudan became an independent nation on 9 July 2011. Medair has been present in South Sudan since 1991, and since the most recent conflict began in December 2013, has assisted thousands of affected people through nutrition, health, water and sanitation, and emergency shelter. The organisation has the capacity to respond to both short- and long-term emergencies wherever they arise in all of the 10 states of South Sudan.
Medair's programme in Maban, South Sudan is supported by Common Humanitarian Fund, E.C Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, United States Department of State's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.
