In this video, watch these two F-35As of the 495th Fighter Squadron part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF LAKENHEATH, request and are cleared for a 'Quick Climb'. Holy salmon, just watch the second one!

So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.

What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.

What is a PTO (Performance Take Off)
This is typical of aircraft such as a Eurofighter Typhoon where the pilot will be at full throttle with reheats (afterburners) and from brakes off will be pulling into a vertical climb between 8-10 seconds. A PTO are for aircraft that have a higher thrust than the weight of the aircraft. For example, the Eurofighter Typhoon produces 40,000 lbs of thrust combined from the two EJ200 Rolls Royce engines but the aircraft weighs less in lbs than the thrust produced which mean it can accelerate vertically.

Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...oooohhhh yeahhhhh!

What is a 'local climb'?
This is your standard departure, just a simple take-off

Can pilots just do quick climbs?
No, all take offs are cleared for a standard take off / local climb out but a pilot can request a quick climb but this has to be cleared by ATC.

495th FS 'VALKYRIES'
The 495th Fighter Squadron (495th FS), nicknamed the Valkyries, is part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, UK. Having been reactivated on 1 October 2021, it became the first overseas United States Air Force squadron to operate the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II on the 15th December 2021. They are the newest on the block here at RAF Lakenheath.

The unit had previously operated the General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark at RAF Lakenheath between 1977 and 1991. They disbanded on the 13th December 1991 and then 30 years later (2021) they came back with F-35As and performing some of the finest pilot skills ever seen by the TCS.
