Feral kitten gets his first bath

We use cameras to monitor our feral colonies, to help us catalog, prioritize and plan our Trap-Neuter-Return projects. Those cameras are the reason we know Nibble's story.

A week ago, we discovered Nibble. Every few hours, we saw her come out from under the pallet that was her home and start to play with something. We couldn't tell what it was, but it seemed familiar to her, and it was always in a different place when we got a new round of photos. In many of the photos, it appeared to have a smiley face on it. We never saw another kitten.
When we went in to set up traps, we discovered her playmate was the skeleton of another kitten who had died a long time ago. We named him Wilson (like the volleyball in Castaway), and brought him back with us. We don't know how or when Wilson died, but he appeared to be a few months old at the time. Wilson deserves to be named and acknowledged, and he makes us want to hug Nibble even more.
Only 25% of kittens born outside will survive. Wilson was one of the 75% who didn't make it. We suspect Nibble had siblings who didn't survive, leaving her all alone at some point.
A few days ago, we were finally able to trap the last kitten from another area on the property and we now believe he is a surviving sibling of Nibble. We don't know what circumstances might have led to him being raised by another mom, but we have seen many times the feral mamas in a colony rescuing and caring for each other's kittens. It's possible Opah got into trouble and mama Mora was able to come to the rescue, and took him back to her nest to raise alongside her older kittens.
Nibble, Opah and their cousins have been reunited, and Nibble is SO happy to have playmates who can play back! ❤
