Morning Walk Through Melaka’s Old Streets 🌤️

We were up by quarter to seven and out the door soon after, leaving Brendan to enjoy a well‑earned sleep‑in. With the morning still cool and quiet, the two of us set off from Jalan Haji Bachee, weaving eastward through Melaka’s familiar streets.

Our route took us across Jalan Bendahara and onto Jalan Bunga Raya Pantai, then further south past Jalan Munshi Abdullah and Jalan Kampung Pantai. After crossing the Chan Koon Cheng Bridge, we slipped into Lorong Hang Jebat—already waking up with the soft stirrings of the heritage quarter.

Breakfast at Lung Ann Refreshments

Our first stop was the ever‑charming Lung Ann Refreshments—a 1938 kopitiam icon beloved for its no‑frills Hainanese breakfast. Kaya‑butter toast, soft‑boiled eggs, kopi pulled the old‑school way… it’s the kind of place that feels unchanged in the best possible way.

Our spread:

Two sets of half‑boiled eggs
Large hot coffee
Iced milk tea

All for a wonderfully humble RM19.10 (≈ USD5/EUR4). By twenty past eight, we were fuelled and ready to wander again.

A Stop for Nyonya Chang

From Jalan Kampung Kuli, we looped toward Joo Huat Nyonya Chang, a tiny shop famous for its handmade Peranakan dumplings. The elderly proprietor greeted us warmly, and we left with five Nyonya chang—fragrant, blue‑tinged, and generously filled—for RM45.00 (≈ USD11/EUR10). Cat was delighted.

A Quiet Stroll Along the Melaka River

We continued north to the riverbank, stepping onto the pedestrian path just as the city was easing into the day. The Melaka River was still and mirror‑like, reflecting pastel shophouses and the soft morning sun. Cafés were sweeping their front steps, boats were humming awake, and murals along the walkway added bursts of colour to the calm.

Joggers passed occasionally, but mostly it was just the two of us, the river, and the gentle rhythm of a city not quite fully awake.

Near Kampung Jawa, the walkway widened, offering peaceful spots to pause before we eventually exited at Jalan Persisiran Bunga Pantai and made our way back across Jalan Bendahara to The Apple Residences.
