In this episode of our Iceland series, we experienced the hot and fiery part of this geographical diverse island.
Iceland sits on top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a 40,000 km long crack in the ocean floor caused by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This crack is moving apart a few centimeters per year.
This geological activity is responsible for some of the most dramatic features of Icelandic nature like volcanos, geothermal pools and geysers.
Icelanders have reaped the benefits of vast geothermal energy resources - one of the cheapest and cleanest forms of energy in existence. Over 85% of housing in Iceland is heated by natural geothermal heat from hot springs
Hverir geothermal area is a must-see stop on Ring Road and one of the top attractions in North Iceland. It is under the Namafjall mountain
At a depth of 1000 metres, the temperature is above 200°C. The water that flows below the surface is quickly heated and comes back to the surface transformed into steam.
The fumarole gas contains hydrogen sulphide that causes that characteristic smell of rotten eggs that makes these places so much fun to explore. The rotten smell is not the only thing one can expect from Hverir. Be also prepared for bubbling mud pools, hissing fumaroles, and cracked colourful grounds.
Geysir is a famous hot spring in the geothermal area of Haukadalur Valley, found in south-west Iceland. It is easily accessible from the golden circle route. Haukadalur Valley boasts a plethora of hot springs and geysers, including the powerful Strokkur.
Strokkur is, arguably, the country’s most famous hot spring, shooting vast jets of boiling water from 20 metres to 40 metres high. One need not to worry about missing this incredible spectacle of nature, as Strokkur erupts every five to ten minutes. Just make sure to have your camera ready.
