Transport Back 60 Years to Somerset & Dorset Railway! With 3 loco types synonymous with the S&D, appropriate rolling stock, authentic signalling and beautifully restored infrastructure, Great Central Railway is the perfect place to the honour the 60th Anniversary since the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway.
After initially opening in 1862, the Somerset and Dorset Railway closed forever on March 7th, 1966, as part of Beeching’s cuts, with the last passenger train running on 6th March. The 136-mile line closed due to heavy financial losses and declining demand due to many passengers moving towards road transport.
We invite you all, whether you are a railway enthusiast or want to support your local heritage railway, the day will be extra special as we recreate the S&D.
