With four movies and a show premiering all in one year, Stephen King is really cashing in his checks.
The Long Walk is exactly what it sounds like - one contestant from each state has to compete in a contest where everyone has to walk.
If you stop for any reason, or you go under 3 mph, you get shot.
And let me tell you, I walk 3mph at the gym, and that is not a slow pace.
Despite this plot line sounding all too familiar regarding current events, this movie does require you to suspend a certain amount of disbelief.
One big reason I kept thinking of was, there were significantly less soldiers than there were contestants, so how could the soldiers possibly keep up with how many times each contestant stopped and for how long?
Because if a contestant stops for any reason, like say, to bend down and tie their shoe, then a timer starts, and he's got three seconds to keep going.
All that being said, I love the relationships that are built between the main characters, even though they're all very Stephen King-esque.
Watch it, and you'll see what I mean.
But one actor in particular stood out to me as Oscar bait.
I realize The Long Walk aint getting nominated for nothin' because it's just one of those movies that doesn't get nominated for anything except maybe sound editing.
But the main character's friend, played by David Jonsson, he's been in stuff, mostly TV shows that I'm too old for, but this kid can act the hell out of a movie.
The Long Walk sounds like it would be slow and meandering, a slog, even, but like many of the contestants, it never stopped and it never slowed down.
I feel like the tension was top notch, which is the most important to me, the acting was excellent, the dialogue was genuine and believable.
Folks, I loved The Long Walk.
In fact, I love it so much, I don't hesitate awarding it my highest score:
The Long Walk is absolutely a Master Beanlighter of a movie, one of the best movies of the year 2025.
Who'd have known that a film that doesn't go above 3 mph would be the one to make this summer worth it?
