Sarah Woodmartin, Teagasc Research Officer outlines how a key focus of her research is increasing growth rates directly from pasture to enhance production efficiency and promote more sustainable lamb finishing systems.
Perennial ryegrass dominates the grazed sward. However, its seasonal growth habit can result in suboptimal sward quality during summer and autumn, hindering lamb performance in the post weaning period. As a result, there has been a growing interest in diversifying the sward with the addition of clovers and herbs to enhance sward quality post weaning.
At Sheep 2025, which takes place on Saturday, 21 June in Teagasc Athenry, Co. Galway, we will present results from a recent study which resulted in improved sward quality, higher lamb performance, all while reducing the need for concentrate supplementation in lamb finishing systems.
At Sheep 2025, we will have workshops and demos to address some of the issues of companion forages in the swards, with plot areas established to look in more detail at the agronomy of these swards and forage options and the wider benefits of their use at farm level.
Sheep 2025 is being run by Teagasc in conjunction with our industry partners, Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine; Bord Bia; Sheep Ireland; and the Irish Farmers Journal.
Irish Country Meats are again the main sponsor for this event, in addition to sponsorship support from FBD Insurance, MSD Animal Health Ireland, and Elanco.
