Kayaking the Glacier Lake in Valdez, Alaska

Just outside Valdez, Alaska lies a lake at the foot of the glacier. It is home to countless icebergs that have calved from the Valdez Glacier, creating a breathtaking landscape. The lake is easily accessible by car. Head out of town on the Richardson Highway and you'll find a parking area and a park with a fire ring and sitting area in front of the lake. In winter, the lake freezes over, transforming into a magical landscape perfect for ice skating, snowshoeing, skiing, or snowmobiling. We heard tales of ice climbing the waterfalls as well, but we were pretty happy with our summer day on the lake!

We were able to observe the glacier calving and the icebergs floating in the water, showcasing the raw power of nature. The surrounding mountains and the vast expanse of the lake create a picturesque setting, and the unique landscape and the ever-changing ice formations provide endless photo opportunities. You are in the heart of the Prince William Sound, one of the most picturesque and pristine spots on earth.

The weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and bring waterproof gear. Your outfitter should provide you with boots, and rubber waders. Be cautious around the ice, as even in the summer, the bergs are moving and the bigger ones are still calving. If you're exploring the lake in winter, be aware of the ice conditions and avoid venturing onto unstable ice.
