Janis Carter (1913-1994), was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from Mather College with degrees in Arts and Music. The shapely beauty had aspirations of being an opera singer, and also modelled and wrote radio scripts while trying to achieve that dream. However, an audition for the Met was a disaster when she was beset by stage fright. Janis landed roles in Broadway musicals, and it was there she was spotted by 20th Century Fox mogul Darryl F. Zanuck. She worked for most of the major studios during her 12 year Hollywood stay, turning out roles in dramas, musicals, film noir, westerns and even a few comedies. Carter left Hollywood in the early 50s, and moved to New York, where she settled into live television roles, eventually becoming a hostess for the NBC quiz show, "Feather Your Nest". Janis married her second husband, Julius Stulman, retired from show business and lived in Florida for many years, involved in community service. She died of a heart attack in Durham, North Carolina at the age of 80. While she didn't quite become a "name star" she was multi-talented and gave performances in many different genres. Her roles in film noirs like "Night Editor" (1946) and "Framed" (1947) are classic examples of cold, calculating and sexy femme fatales. She certainly was a more than competent actress who never quite got the acclaim she deserved. Presented in this tribute are photos of Janis and clips from "Night Editor" set to music by Frank Sinatra. Enjoy!
