The number of Americans who say they share the Christian faith may be on the decline, according to the authors of a new study.
The Pew Research Center says in the past seven years, the Christian share of the population fell in the US, from 78.4 percent in 2007, to 70.6 percent today.
Adults under the age of 33 are a big part of the decline, with roughly a third claiming to be religiously unaffiliated. The trend, however, is widespread.
"This is happening among young people and those of retirement age," a researcher from Pew told Al Jazeera.
"It's happening in every region of the country."
Protestants and Catholics experienced the biggest decline in affiliation, but when it comes to more charismatic, evangelical arms of Christianity, numbers are on the rise.
"We see it as a prime opportunity to engage... and challenge those who have become disillusioned with a religious faith that for centuries has been an entwined in American culture," Christian pastor Joshua Symonette says.
Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, DC.
