Pirandello’s pastoral comedy written in 1916 asks us to question what ‘natural’ behaviour is. In the Sicilian countryside of its setting, fecundity is a matter of great importance.
The men want heirs for their land and the women want to be mothers, but what do these roles really require and how does one negotiate what parenthood in such a close knit and intimate community might actually mean?
Nineteenth century morals are entangled with, contradicted and overwhelmed by an older, wilder, more Bacchanalian and ultimately more honest approach to existence.
