Here are 4 training and technique tips to smash the sandbag lunges and PB your next HYROX race.
Tip No 1 the sandbag lunges are predominantly a strength endurance station to get strong and fly through this station train split squat (exercise 1) with a heavy kettlebell or dumbbell, building up to 3 to 5 sets of 10 to 15 reps.
Weight wise I suggestion 32kg for men’s pro, 24kg for open & women pro and 12kg for women’s open.
Combining this with (exercise 2) a hip hinged deadlift with for the same number of sets and reps will help you to build rounded glute strength, this in turn will transfer to faster lunges and foundational sled push strength.
Tip No 2. Train load under fatigue for time – Get comfortable and used to carrying that sand bag for a distance and time greater than race day, work up to being able to comfortable cover 130m or one and half times your expected station time. Adding this to your training sessions, is a sure proof way to ensure you don’t need to place the sand bag down come race day and avoid any penalties on this station.
Tip 3. Strength without speed will only get you so far, so to build explosive power and speed combine tip 1 and 2 with shorter high intensity training bursts of lunges, complete these on separate training days, completing max reps for time for 50 to 90 seconds with a minute rest between, repeating this for 5 rounds.
