India is the world's largest rice producer, feeding 800 million people through government programs. But one in three Indian children are stunted, diabetes rates are exploding, and anemia affects a quarter of adults. The grain that saved us from starvation now fills stomachs without nourishing bodies.
In this documentary, we travel to Odisha's KBK region—once synonymous with India's worst poverty and hunger—to understand the world's first Specialty Rice Programme. Scientists have developed biofortified rice varieties: naturally higher in protein and zinc, lower in sugar, designed to look, cook, and taste exactly like traditional rice.
15,000 farmers are already growing these varieties. They report better yields, premium prices, and rice their families actually love eating.
Can biofortification turn farms into the first line of public health?
This is the story of India's quiet nutrition revolution.
