Описание: Maritime experts are raising alarm over Iran’s sanctions-busting “shadow fleet” of ageing oil tankers, warning that a catastrophic spill could be far worse than the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.

A new assessment by Pole Star Global found that nearly half of 29 Iranian-linked tankers operating covertly are older than the recommended 20-year service life. Several are classified as “extreme risk,” with some vessels over 30 years old and capable of carrying up to 300,000 tonnes of crude each.

Experts say these ships often switch off tracking systems, lack proper insurance, and operate outside international safety oversight. In the event of a spill, cleanup costs — estimated between $860 million and $1.6 billion — could fall entirely on affected coastal nations.

Environmental groups warn the threat is growing, with potential devastation to marine ecosystems, coastlines, and local livelihoods if a major accident occurs.
