French ethnomusicologist and archaeomusicologist Patrick Kersalé has spent over 25 years in Asia, searching for historic instruments and studying surviving traditional music. But it was not enough for him. He has spent the past 4 years investigating musical instruments from the Angkorian world, through the iconography, inscriptions and archaeological objects. Based on that research, Kersalé has been able to rebuild extinct Angkorian instruments from the 7th to 13th centuries! Several kinds of harps, monochord zithers, cymbals, drums, trumpets, and conches have thus literally been brought back to life !
With the rebuilt instruments in hand, Cambodian Living Arts recruited more than 20 musicians and dancers to create the Sounds of Angkor troupe. Since March 2013, the troupe has been experimenting and rehearsing weekly in Khna Village, Siem Reap province, where Master Man Men leads his CLA-sponsored class of Classical Wedding Music. Thanks to his expert knowledge of ancient music and instruments, Master Man Men is leading Sounds of Angkor, with advice from Patrick Kersalé and assistance from Kantaoming Master Srey Thoeung and 2 experts in Khmer traditional music: Nhok Sinat and Suon Sopheak. Musicians come from Classical Wedding Music and Kantaoming (funeral music) backgrounds.
It was a great honor for Sounds of Angkor to give their first-ever performance on June 18th, 2013, for delegates to UNESCO’s 37th World Heritage Committee session, held in Phnom Penh and to welcome His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni in Angkor Vat.

Créée en 2013 par l’ethnomusicologue Patrick Kersalé et l’organisation Cambodian Living Arts, la troupe Sounds of Angkor s’est spécialisée dans la reviviscence d’instruments et patrimoines musicaux disparus ou tombés en désuétude.
Sounds of Angkor redonne notamment vie aux instruments de musique des 7e au 16e siècles reconstitués par Patrick Kersalé.
La troupe a été développée comme un outil expérimental afin de tester les recherches de Patrick Kersalé basée sur l’iconographie, l’épigraphie, l’archéologie et l’ethnomusicologie. Ces recherches et l’expérimentation continuent. Sounds of Angkor teste l’acoustique et la solidité des instruments, la cohérence des orchestres en fonction des lieux probables et des utilisations anciennes. Sounds of Angkor s’attache, dans la mesure du possible, de respecter le genre des personnes qui officiaient autrefois. Pour cela, un orchestre de femmes musiciennes a été recréé tel qu’il existait à la cour du roi Jayavarman VII à la fin du XIIe et au début du XIIIe siècle.
La troupe Sounds of Angkor s’est déjà produite lors d’évènements nationaux. Elle a notamment accueilli Sa Majesté Norodom Sihamoni roi du Cambodge lors de sa venue au temple d’Angkor Vat en 2013. Elle a aussi participé à des évènements internationaux comme le 37e Congrès International Unesco à Phnom Penh.
Sounds of Angkor a pour vocation de promouvoir la culture ancienne du Cambodge par tous les moyens : concerts, conférences-concerts, festivals, télévision. (Fête de la musique au Sofitel de Siem Reap 2013).
Certains des instruments anciens joués par Sounds of Angkor avait à l’origine vocation à servir les rituels religieux. C’est pourquoi, la troupe se produit également lors de cérémonies privées ou publiques.
Fort d’une vingtaine de musiciens et danseuses, Sounds of Angkor est aussi un ensemble à géométrie variable permettant l’organisation de concerts et de conférences-concerts avec un nombre restreint d’artistes. Cela est rendu possible grâce à ses artistes polyinstrumentistes. Le troupe s’adapte ainsi à la taille des auditoires et aux contraintes budgétaires.
Enfin, la troupe Sounds of Angkor a pour vocation de vous faire rêver en vous transportant dans le passé. Écoutez et imaginez-vous dans un temple khmer à l’époque angkorienne…
