Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors have become a popular form of weed control in recent years, do to their effectiveness in managing glyphosate-resistant populations of weeds like common waterhemp. These herbicides to come with a little bit of risk, especially in cool, wet conditions. In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Bob Berkevich discusses PPO Herbicide injuries he has seen in soybean fields. He talks about how wet conditions can cause plants to become more susceptible to this type of injury. He shows some of the symptoms of this type of injury, including discoloration of the cotyledons, bronzing of the leaves, discoloration of the hypocotyl, and a girdling effects on the hypocotyl. Bob stresses patience with these type of injuries to give your plants time to potentially recover, as heat and good growing conditions can help plants grow out of these injuries if the symptoms remain minimal.
