Craigmillar Castle - Edinburgh’s second castle.

Описание: Craigmillar Castle was built in the late 14th century by the Preston family. They were first granted land in the area by King David II in 1342 and then In a further grant of 1374, King Robert II gave the remaining lands of Craigmillar to Sir Simon de Preston, Sheriff of Midlothian.

Originally a Tower House, succeeding generations built up a complex of structures - resulting in the castle you see today.

The Stuart monarchs would use the castle as a place of refuge - whether sheltering from political intrigue or plague.

Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Craigmillar from 20 November to 7 December 1566, still in poor health following a serious illness in October. During this stay a pact was drawn between her closest noblemen. Called the “Craigmillar Bond”, it was a plot to kill her husband - Lord Darnley.

After various misadventures, Mary found herself connected with the Preston family once again when in 1567, after her failed battle of Carberry Hill, she was captured and then imprisoned in the Edinburgh townhouse of Sir Simon Preston, before being transferred to her incarceration at Lochleven Castle.

Craigmillar was proposed as a Scottish residence for Queen Victoria - but came to nothing when she instead chose Balmoral Castle.

The castle has been used as the location of Ardsmuir prison, place of Jamie’s imprisonment in the television series Outlander - based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. It was also a location used in the television series Ivanhoe.
